Historical photo of United States Marines at Iwo Jima during World War II with Navy Corpsmen tending to wounded on stretchers titled, The Corpsmen of Iwo.

February 19, 1945, the battle of Iwo Jima begins:

The first assault waves from the 4th and 5th Marine Divisions hit the beaches of Iwo Jima: The Marine Divisions on Iwo Jima were assigned five percent more corpsmen than was the standard allotment, but that proved woefully inadequate as the corpsmen losses were far too great for them to overcome. Corpsman casualties in six battalions exceeded 50 percent and in one battalion exceeded 68 percent. In the 36-day battle, 332 hospital corpsmen were killed in action or died of their wounds, and another 659 corpsmen were severely wounded, requiring evacuation. Iwo corpsmen received a total 14 Navy Crosses (including six posthumous), 108 Silver Stars and 287 Bronze Stars. Among the 27 Medals of Honor awarded to Iwo Jima veterans (the most of any battle in World War II), four were bestowed to hospital corpsmen.

Past Activities and Information:

Honoring and Remembering:

Members of the Post’s Honor Guard recently performed at the Memorial Service for George Armenta, a U.S. Army veteran, and the funeral service for Arthur Ehramjiam, a WWII U.S. Army veteran. The participation of the Post’s Honor Guard is an important and memorable part of the service and is greatly appreciated by the deceased’s family and friends.
