Post and Auxiliary membership meetings:Thursday, February 17 at the Vistoso Memorial Chapel, 2285 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd., Oro Valley. A social with complimentary refreshments follow each meeting of the Post and Auxiliary. Meetings are 3rd Thursday of the month, 6:30pm. Riders Chapter 132 membership meeting: Wednesday, March 2, 6:00 pm at Elks Lodge #385, 1800 N. Oracle Rd. Meetings are on 1st Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm. Members of the American Legion Riders are members of the Legion, Sons of the American Legion, and of the Auxiliary, who are motorcycle riding enthusiasts. March 5, the 80 th anniversary of the Seabees: Founded March 5, 1942. US Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Seabees. Their nickname is a heterograph of the first initials “CB” from the words Construction Battalion. The Seabee motto is Construimus Batuimus “We Build, We Fight”.
March 5 (note date change), “Stuff the Truck” with pet supplies: Tucson Veterans Serving Veterans (TVSV), the sponsoring organization of the March 16 Stand Down Resource Fair event for all Veterans in Need, is conducting a Stuff the Truck event. This event is to collect items for the pets of the Veterans attending the Resource Fair. If you have a love of animals and would like to help our less fortunate Veterans, this is a great opportunity. When: Saturday, March 5, 10AM-2PM. Where: PETSMART at 4374 N. Oracle Rd. Tucson, AZ. What is needed: Wet and dry unopened pet food, treats, toys, leashes, collars, blankets, harnesses, and collapsible bowls. Note: Cannot accept medications and open packages of food. Post and Auxiliary Unit 132 are sponsoring community partners of TVSV.
March 14 only, clothing collection: New socks, underwear and hygiene items and new and gently used casual clothes for the veterans attending the March 16 Stand Down event. Bring your bagged or boxed hygiene and clothing donations to Splendido at 13500 N Rancho Vistoso Blvd Oro Valley March 14, *one day onlyat 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM only*, and only at Splendido. March 16,Tucson Stand Down for homeless and At-Risk veterans and their families: Volunteers needed: The Purpose ofStand Down is to provide veterans with access to services such as medical care, employment opportunities, housing, legal services, disability claims assistance, meals, clothing, care for their pets and more. Location: Grand Luxe Hotel, 1365 W. Grant Rd, Tucson. *Volunteers needed March 14 (sort donated clothing), March 15 (set up), and March 16 Resource Day. Resource Day volunteers needed for registration, the clothing “store”, food service, escorts, security, and other tasks (not required to be a member of the Oro Valley Post or Auxiliary to volunteer). March 26, Spaghetti dinner and dance fundraiser: Riders Chapter 132 has scheduled a dinner-dance fundraiser to raise funds for local Veterans support programs. See attached event flyer. POC is Janet Baldwinjanethered@aol.com.
February 6, Four Chaplains Memorial Service: In honor of the four chaplains who gave their lives to save others during the WWII sinking of Army transport Dorchester. Thechaplains and 668 others died when Dorchester sank.The local memorial service was heldat Kino Veterans Memorial Park, Tucson. Many members of Post 132 and Auxiliary Unit 132 were present to pay their respects. Post 132 Honor Guard performed a firing salute and Post 132 commander Wayne Larroque and Auxiliary Unit 132 member Marcia Wohlhueter placed a remembrance wreath during the service.
February 9, The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship program:Local high school students competed in the Post level competition hosted by Post 132. The contest is designed to instill a greater knowledge and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution with an emphasis to the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen. Each contestant delivered a prepared memorized oration of eight to ten minutes on an aspect of the Constitution and a 3-5 minute speech on one of four randomly selected “pre-assigned” Articles of the Constitution. The first three place winners advance to the District 2 competition February 19. There are five levels of competition beginning at the local Post level leading to the National Finals competition. Financial prizes, increasing in value at each level of competition, are awarded. First place winner: Caleb Rasor, Grade 10, BASIS Oro Valley High School. Second place winner: Grace Shin, Grade 10, BASIS and Third place winner: Analise Pena, Grade 10, Marana High School. Congratulations to these talented and patriotic students. Thanks to the many Post and Auxiliary Unit volunteers who made it happen and to those who attended to give encouragement to the students.
