September 15, POW/MIA Recognition Day:
A time set aside to remember those who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who are missing in action (MIA), and their families. The Tucson VA (SAVAHCS) is sponsoring a POW/MIA recognition ceremony to be held Friday, September 15, beginning at 8:00 am in the courtyard of the VA with the presentation of colors and the singing of the national anthem, followed by the recognition ceremony in building 1, conference rooms A/B. Location: Tucson VA, 3601 S. 6th Ave. Harvey Horne, Post 132 member and WWII veteran and POW will be the guest speaker.
September 17, Constitution Day:
Normally observed on September 17, the day in 1787 that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.
September 18, U.S. Air Force Birthday:
76th Air Force Birthday. On September 18, 1947, Chief Justice Fred Vinson swore in Stuart Symington as the first Secretary of the Air Force, founding a new branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
September 18, Air National Guard Birthday:
The official birth date of the Air National Guard as a reserve component of the Air Force is September 18, 1947. The National Guard includes the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. The Guard’s mission is to maintain properly trained and equipped units, available for prompt mobilization for war, national emergency, or as otherwise needed.
September 21, Tribute to Fallen Soldiers Memorial Torch Motorcycle Ride:
Visit and honor Gold Star families in the local area. The evening dinner event, reservations only, begins at 4:00 pm at the Tucson Elks Lodge #385, at 1800 N. Oracle Rd. Tucson. Contact 520-299-5105 after 4:00 pm Tuesday through Friday. See attached event flyer.
